Tank or Tankless? The Honest Answer for Ohio Homes
Tankless gets a lot of hype. Sometimes it's earned and sometimes it isn't. Before we quote, we look at how your house actually uses hot water and what your gas line and venting can handle. Then we tell you which one makes sense. If you want to compare, we'll quote both.
A new tank is usually the better value when:
- Your old tank just quit and you want hot water fast. A standard tank is usually the quickest swap.
- Your gas line or venting would need major upgrades to support tankless. That work goes on the bill.
- You won't be in the house long enough for the higher upfront cost to pay off.
Tankless is usually worth it when:
- You keep running out of hot water during back-to-back showers. A properly sized tankless unit doesn't run out the way a tank does.
- You want the floor space back. Tankless units hang on the wall.
- You plan to stay put. With regular maintenance, a tankless unit typically outlasts a tank, and it doesn't spend all day keeping 50 gallons hot.
Two things specific to Greater Cincinnati:
- Hard water. Our area's moderately hard water leaves scale inside a tankless heat exchanger. Tankless units need regular descaling and flushing, which we do, and most manufacturer warranties require it. Pairing tankless with a water softener cuts down on scale.
- Winter. A tankless unit has a set flow rate (gallons per minute), and it works harder when the incoming water is cold. We size it for a January morning with two showers running, not a mild day in May.

Leaking From the Bottom? Same-Day Replacement Is Often Available
Water pooling under a tank usually means the tank itself has failed, and tanks don't heal. We can often replace a standard tank water heater the same day you call, Saturdays included, during our posted hours.
Do this right now:
- Turn off the cold water valve on the pipe going into the top of the heater.
- Gas: set the gas control to "Off" or "Pilot." Electric: turn off the heater's breaker.
- Put down a towel or a bucket and call us at 513-540-4575.
About our hours: we're open Mon–Fri 8am–7pm and Sat 9am–1pm. If your heater springs a leak at 11pm on a Tuesday, shut it down using the steps above and call us when we open. A shut-off water heater can wait overnight, and your basement floor will thank you.

Not every problem needs a new heater. On gas and electric units we fix thermocouples, pilots, elements, thermostats, sediment buildup, anode rods and pressure relief valves. If your unit is under 8 years old and the repair costs less than half of a replacement, repairing it usually makes sense. If it's 10–12+ years old, keeps breaking, or the tank is leaking, replacing it is the smarter move. We'll tell you which it is. We're not in the business of selling replacements nobody needs.
